LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL

Summary: As we read our topic we read
about one specific way the college board
wanted us to do things such as studying
& note taking ; students didn’t have the
choice to do in a way that would help
them out , which basically contradicts
what we’ve learned In this class. In this
class we learned that no two people
learn exactly the same. So, find a way
that works for you ! One thing that we did
agree with the college board on was the
SMART Goals . Your future is in your
hands, write down a plan that will help
you achieve your life Goals !

1. How To Study
· Don’t be limited! There are
many different way to
study so explore a few and
choose what works best
for you.

2. How To Take Notes
· Cornel Notes work for you
? Great ! It didn’t for me, so
I found a way that did.
** Bullet points,
summeries, ask questions,
etc…

3. Reading and understanding.
· Not everyone will
undersand the material so
consider doing
discussions . They will
help everyone get a better
understanding, even those
who did undertand.
** You will receive many
different points of views
· Don’t be afraid to ask
questions!
· ReRead the material as
many times as necessary
4. Research
· Research Different topics
all based on the same
topic. It will help you get a
better understanding on
what your subject is
actually about.
· Get research from more
than two sources that way
you get different
information and different
perspectives.

5. Reflection On Writing Process
· Like we said before ,
different ways work for
different people.
** Organization maps,
bullet points to organize
your thoughts,

· Different forms of writing
require different
organization and thought
processes

...Activity 4...
1. What is a tragedy? What themes and
outcomes would you expect to find in a
tragedy?

A tragedy is something horrible
that happens when you least
expect it. the theme would be the
lesson of the wrong path.

2. What do you know about the language
in plays written by Shakespeare?

Shakespearean language is quite
difficult to understand. It seems as
if he created his own language. As
long as you reread the play line by
line you'll be able to comprehend it.

3. What have you done in the past to help
yourself read Shakespeare effectively?

We went over it in class during the
seminar and each student
participated and mentioned how
they interpreted the play. Last year
we had someone come in class
and explain what Shakespeare was
trying to say in one of his plays. We
also had to rewrite Hamlet a few
weeks ago with a partner
interpreting each line in our own
vocabulary.

4. The soliloquy here begins with a
famous quotation: "To be, or not to be--that is the question." What do you think
is "the question" Hamlets asking? How
do you think he might answer it?

The question he is asking is
whether to be someone or not or
maybe if he should do something
or not. He's asking himself the
same question we all ask ourselves
before doing something except
he's doing it in a more clever way.

Hamlet's Soliloquy.. Activity 3

...Activity 3...
1. What Prior experiences have you had
reading plays?

Plays are always difficult to
understand. Everyone interprets
them differently and it affects
everyone in a different way. I've
read Shakespeare's play " Romeo
and Juliet" before and it was so
complex and old fashioned that the
teacher had to go over it line by line
and explain what was trying to be
said. It's surprising how well
messages are hidden in such
complex writing.

2. What did you notice about the page
format and annotations?

The format was like a play. It would
say exactly what had to be done in
each scene. The only difficult part,
was having to figure out what each
thing meant.

3. What did you notice about the text's
structure?

Even though "Romeo and Juliet"
was written as a play. It sounded
as if it was meant to be a poem. I
guess that's what made it sound a
little more romantic and less weird.

Hamlet's Soliloquy...Activity #1... Alicia Ramirez Johna Emerick

William Shakespeare, "Hamlet's Soliloquy" from Hamlet, Prince of Denmark

Activity 1: What does being alive mean to you? How do you assign value to life? What makes life challenging? What makes it worth living? Describe a few examples that help show you're thinking about how people should value life.

  • Being alive means being able to experience new things and using your time wisely to do what you want and having no regrets. A life with regrets is not living. You're just dying inside if you hold back. Be open and willing to face your fears. You know you're alive when you feel all sorts of different emotions. Everything seems to affect you in some way. Life becomes challenging every day you face a difficult situation. The challenges in life make a person themselves though. It ends up defining who they are and what they are capable of facing. Some have a more difficult time at facing challenges then others, just like it a situation can affect some more than others. Everyone has a different opinion to why life is worth living. In our opinion, life is worth living because it brings you happiness. Happiness makes life meaningful, therefor worth living. People should learn how to cherish what they have because no one ever knows what day will be their last. Another thing that makes life worth living is your family who is always by your side when you need them. In general though, most people value life on success. Not necessarily meaning money, but more like which goals and dreams they've accomplished through it.

A TRULY INTERESTING PIECE OF NONFICTION

The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman

When Germany invaded Poland, Stuka bombers devastated Warsaw—and the city's zoo along with it. With most of their animals dead, zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski began smuggling Jews into empty cages. Another dozen "guests" hid inside the Zabinskis' villa, emerging after dark for dinner, socializing, and, during rare moments of calm, piano concerts. Jan, active in the Polish resistance, kept ammunition buried in the elephant enclosure and stashed explosives in the animal hospital. Meanwhile, Antonina kept her unusual household afloat, caring for both its human and its animal inhabitants—otters, a badger, hyena pups, lynxes.

With her exuberant prose and exquisite sensitivity to the natural world, Diane Ackerman engages us viscerally in the lives of the zoo animals, their keepers, and their hidden visitors. She shows us how Antonina refused to give in to the penetrating fear of discovery, keeping alive an atmosphere of play and innocence even as Europe crumbled around her.(less)

Freedom of Choice

Their are a ton of pros and cons to having freedom. For me well my parents have always let me basically have my freedom under their roof. As long as my choices are reasonable and if I make the wrong choice they step in but I can honestly say the only time they have stepped in on my decision is when I want to go to my friends house and I still have homework so they say no.  But this also opens some opportunities for you if you have never had your freedom. For example say you go off to college you get to choose your classes that you want to take and you can either pick easy classes or classes that are going to get you somewhere .  But then again it can make something's easier and some harder. For instance you can maybe hang out with friends more often so that becomes easier but then you have to manage your time so you can fit I'm study time and homework time. Also it's easier to decide if your going to school that day or not because the teachers don't care if you through your life away . Now the harder part you have to be the one who reminds yourself about homework and waking up on time or leaving a friends at the right time and if you sleep in no body cares so you have to be the  one that motivates your self to do things . Over all I prefer making my own choices. My parents have raised me and my siblings this way and I have learned already so it won't be such a surprise to me when I go off too college. And that's my honest opinion .

NO CHILD LEFT UNTABLETED

Most comments from Mr. Kein and Mr. Rotella reflect the connection  between technology, learning process and the workforce. Mr. Britt describes teachers as facilitators (they just distribute work). Mr. Rotella  states that they are kind of like architects of the environment. Some professionals are shifting to become facilitators of self-learning and self-expression. Many consider the new way of learning or more so teaching a disruptive form yet still like the idea after it was presented to the staff.

Essay Topic

We thought it would be a perfect opportunity for myself to explain to the three people how the persuasive essay works and that way they can all build up their persuasive writing skills. And with a great topic like this it's easy to find different statistics and stories or interviews from the internet .

Analysis #1

I decided to do my text analysis on the article that I posted since I know most about it. My article was " fat letters" which is posted on this blog. So basically , some schools are sending letters home to let parents know that their child is overweight. Some people agree that this is a good idea and others not so much . I,  personally , think its a waist of time because parents can obviously tell. I mean , how could they not? I feel like the only way a parent wouldn't notice is if they aren't involved in their child's life and just basically let them do whatever they want, other than that the parent would notice. Wouldn't you ?

My Big Question

My big question is have you ever said a word repetitively to the point to where it sounds like the weirdest word in the world. I mean try it with me Engine engine engune engan engien . You repeat it so much it's almost impossible to pronounce it right the next time. I guess what I'm getting at is how did these names come upon us how did these words create our English vocabulary. Who spoke our language the first time ? What If it used to be all written and nobody spoke and then one day someone tried to say it and mispronounced it and now we say cow instead of couw. I guess we will never know but that is my BIG QUESTION.

"It's All Latin To Me"

If you are not familiar with the Latin spoken language then you will find it is not an easy language to understand, and the latin written language is also very difficult because the English alphabet is not used, so when someone says 'sounds like Latin to me' they are actually saying they don't understand you. * In Greece, its ''Its all Chinese to me''. The Meaning Defined to this class to me would be that we are starting from scratch we know nothing about this resource yet. We are pulling a rabbit out of the hat that we didn't even know existed. But it is something possible to learn , and that is why I think you provided us with this saying .

PHAT

In what is sure to spark a heated debate, the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a report championing schools who send "report cards" that notify parents if their child is overweight or obese, reported U.S. News on August 19. Their report is a boost for public schools who screen children's height and weight and then follow up with so-called "fat letters" to the parents of children whose weight misses the health mark.
Currently, about one-fourth of all states in the nation stipulate that schools must measure their students' weight and height. Almost all of those schools follow up with the "fat letters" as necessary. But although the American Academy of Pediatrics believes these letters are beneficial, opponents are concerned for three reasons:
  • Parental letters can backfire when it comes to how families handle the news. If parents single out one child in the family and deny the plump sibling to have treats while others indulgence, the stage is set for future problems such asbinging in secret, food addiction or even eating disorders.
  • Fit versus fat: Extremely muscular children could be categorized as overweight, say opponents, and such inaccurate measurement readings could cause athletic children to be put on unnecessary diets by well-meaning parents.
  • Bullying: If other children find out, the letters could lead to taunting on the playground, with cruel chants such as "Chubby, chubby, two-by-four!"
The screening are based on body mass index (BMI), a height to weight ratio designed to be used for screening. Both the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics advocate using the BMI results to check for obesity in children. Offering an impartial viewpoint: Naim Alkhouri, a pediatrician at Cleveland Clinic Children's.
"Some kids can have a high BMI and be metabolically healthy," Dr. Alkhouri says. "But there's no way to know unless you receive an assessment." And she emphasizes that the BMI results should be viewed as a "wake-up call" for health care providers as well as parents to evaluate whether the child's body weight is impacting their health.
"The growing number of children and adolescents seen daily in our clinics with weight management issues, decreased physical activity, and increasing screen time is alarming," asserted the American Academy of Pediatrics report's author, Michael Flaherty, a physician at the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. "Obesity is an epidemic in our country, and one that is compromising the health and life expectancy of our children." Therefore, he contends, "BMI screening letters are an additional awareness tool to promote conversations about healthy eating habits, exercise, and weight in the safety and confidential environment of the child's home."
What do you think about it ?

1. I believe that the only possible problem I will have with this class is my Internet situation. I am the last house on the Internet but we already discussed this and figured out that I could either come in at lunch or find another computer source.

2.  I remember on the second day of high school I was in Mr. Guerra's class and he was teaching us about the metric system . Everyone has learned the metric system in jr. High but for me It never clicked. The style of his teaching really helped me not only did he teach but he taught us hands on along with a fun game or a silly mind teaser.

3. I'm most excited for the online blogging part. I've never been good or big on computers and technology so it will be interesting along the way. The one thing I am concerned about Is the spelling tests but other than that I believe I'm good. I hope this will help me further in my other classes and anytime I will need to do a writing assignment or a resume of some sort.
